The announcement for the latest schools to receive grants under the Federal Governments National Solar Schools Program was broadcasted throughout Australia. 784 schools in Australia have each been awarded a maximum of $50,000 for the installation of solar panels as well as other renewable energy systems such as rain water tanks, LED lighting and insulation under the solar schools program.
The announcement of the solar schools program was made today by Mark Dreyfus who is the Parliamentary Secretary for Climate Change and Energy Efficiency. He said, “The combination of renewable energy systems installed under this program will generate approximately 20 MW of solar power – the equivalent of powering around 4,200 average households each day.”
As well as environmental and educational benefits, the solar schools program guidelines stated that applications were also assessed on value for money criteria.
Since commencement of the solar schools program in July 2008, more than 8000 schools have applied for the intuitive and so far, 4,600 schools have been awarded the grant. To date, there has been over $190 million in funding towards the solar schools scheme.
