A great rush in installation of solar energy conversion devices is expected in the lead up to a reduction in Australia’s Solar Credits rebate. Ergon Energy is urging that IES applications be lodged soon.
The Solar Credits rebate will be reduced by 33% from July 1 this year. Currently, the rebate offers to save Australians thousands of dollars on a rooftop solar panel array.
“We are expecting a significant increase in the rate of IES applications prior to 30 June 2012, when the Federal Government’s Solar Credits rebate is reduced”, states the bulletin. “Ideally, all applications for systems intended to be installed before that date should be lodged by Monday 30 April 2012.”
Ergon says this is especially important if the inverter is to be used in a system that is large enough to require further technical assessment. Ergon has said it is experiencing some technical assessment delays due to the volume of solar PV applications and the growing complexity of requirements.
A household does not require approval form Ergon Energy to install a solar power system but does need to satisfy the requirements of the Office of the Renewable Energy Regulator, to allow the creation of Solar Credits. However, that system must acquire approval from Ergon to be connected to the grid. It is recommended that the installation company submit an IES application on behalf of the owner and have that approved by Ergon before installation.
If a system should be installed prior to gaining Ergon’s approval; when the application is finally lodged, reviewed and possibly rejected for whatever reason, the household will not be able to start saving on their electricity bills.

The ascent of solar in Queensland is not just due to the Solar Credits rebate, which is available nationally – the state also currently has the nation’s most generous active feed in tariff incentive for home solar power systems.
Households in Brisbane and surrounding areas who install solar power can save up to approximately $800 a year with an entry-level system according. Many are choosing to install larger systems, further slashing electricity bills or getting rid of them altogether.
