Like others from his generation, Colin Fall of Bundaberg was raised in a culture where pointless consumption was avoided. His parents once lived on 60 pounds for an entire year, and his grandfather taught him how to hunt rabbits when he was eight years old, telling him it would put food on the table. To Mr Fall, money is not something to be wasted.
While he recognises the environmental benefits, the clincher for him was the long-term financial rewards for investing in solar. His 3-kilowatt system was installed by Sunworx 18 months ago.
“I got quotes from a few companies and looked at how much the system puts out and how much I’m using here,” he said.
Mr Fall is now putting more electricity back into the grid than he is actually consuming, thus making money out of Ergon Energy.
The owner of Sunworx said solar panels in this region needed to be raised on cyclone-rated brackets 10cm above the roof to allow ventilation.
