The Australian Marine Complex in Henderson, Western Australia witnessed the unveiling of a new wave power project helmed by Carnegie Wave Energy. Three CETO units, each with a 240 kilowatt capacity are a joint project between Carnegie Wave Energy and the financial support of ARENA, which contributed to the funding of the project with a staggering $13.1 million grant. The total cost of the entire project is estimated at $34 million. The CETO units are the product of hard labour and dedicated research in wave technology, which aims to harness the power of the ocean’s currents to produce renewable energy, which is in line with Australia’s burgeoning green initiatives.

The project is considered to be an important exhibition of a total grid-connected CETO wave energy installation on a commercial scale. How the three units operate relies on a simple mechanism wherein the combined power of the trio would utilise the energy derived from the ocean’s waves in order to propel offshore seabed pumps with high-pressure water. A subsea pipeline would be responsible for the transmission of water to an onshore power station where it would then be the driving force for hydroelectric turbines, and in turn, the main power source.

This new project is set to be the first revenue for Carnegie Wave Energy, who consider this as their first breakthrough in the area of wave technology. While the technology is very promising for the renewable energy sector, doubts have been raised regarding its profitability as a commercial endeavour. With this new development, however, the technology is expected to make it big as more and more companies get interested and more and more government support is made available through various channels.

About Carnegie Wave Energy

Carnegie Wave Energy is a developer of clean energy technologies focusing on wave technology which aims to harness its power through the generation and sustenance of renewable energy. Being an Australia-based company has allowed Carnegie Wave Energy to experiment with hydropower and has since produced new technology which could also be used for the production of zero-emission desalinated water. Carnegie Wave Energy is widely supported by federal governments, which have also been their primary consumer base ever since the company was established.
