The introduction of the Model X by Tesla Motors blows past the expectations of both consumers and investors despite the excitement that the Model S has injected into the automotive industry.

Tesla Motors has unveiled the 2014 Model X, the third of its electric vehicle model after the Roadster and the Model S sedan. Model X is a seven-passenger car designed to be more family-friendly and versatile than the previous Model S.

This current model also doubles the size of the company’s current US car line-up. Model X basically looks like Model S on the outside but is stretched vertically. The headlights, taillights, grille and its general shape are similar to the early sedan. Model X’s dashboard is nearly identical with that of the sedan even imitating the S’s reconfigurable gauge cluster and the 17 inch central touch screen.

But there are two distinct differences between Model X and Model S. Model X has a forward facing third row of seats and a set of rear “falcon-wing” doors, while Model S has an optional way-back row consisting of a pair of rear-facing jump seats which is only accessible through the hatch.

Tesla Motors says that this current pair of upward-swinging doors is designed to ease ingress and egress to both the second and third rows of seats of the electric vehicle.

Not Everyone is Happy with Model X Design

However, some in the automotive industry feels that these falcon wing doors are not in sync with the Model X’s advertised image as a family-oriented car. They believe that this type of door will make it difficult for the loading of children.

The company’s second quarter earnings not only helped the Model X looked attractive to the consumers’ and investors’ minds, but could also highlight the company’s earning power according to ELon Musk, Tesla Motors CEO.

“So, it’s sort of reasonable to expect that if one has – just address the demand and then the servicing of things – it’s reasonable to expect that if we see sort of a comfortable 1,000 unit demand on the sedan side, well, probably we should expect that similar number on the SUV side,” said Musk.

“My guess is we’ll actually see slightly higher on the SUV side. I think the Model X is going to (be) a phenomenal car,” he added. Musk expects that when spring of 2015 comes and the production of the Model X is kept on track, he expects a split in the production of the Model S and the Model X to be about 1,000 units per week.

With the market’s preference going the way of the SUV, he believes the numbers could skew slightly toward the Model X.

Tesla Motors Model X electric vehicle can perform things that can never be expected from a car of its size. It has a low centre of gravity which translates in very nimble reflexes at each turn. Its electric power train provides instant torque which is very useful for quick lane changes, even if the car is fully loaded with 7 passengers.
