Finnish technology developers AW-Energy has decided to commercialise its WaveRoller™ technology. Mid-August 2014, the company went on to sign a Framework agreement with the independent certification organisation, Lloyd’s Register Energy.

This alliance agreement will allow Lloyd’s Register Energy to use its vast experience of marine power generation in order to better provide a valued and independent review of each stage of the work carried out by the WaveRoller™ team.

Such an agreement will ensure that all risks are identified as well as mitigated throughout the project lifecycle and that the WaveRoller™ technology satisfies the industry’s best practice values.

AW-Energy WaveRoller technology improved by alliance

The intent of this alliance will aim for full certification of WaveRoller™ technology as well as the technical bonuses that come with certification, such as optimisation of project financing as well as facilitating insurance cover on a commercial scale.

“Lloyd’s Register Energy has a long history in certifying devices in the marine environment and AW-Energy’s WaveRoller™ project is one of the world’s latest innovations for the renewable sector.” – Ross Wigg, VP Renewables at Lloyd’s Register Energy.

Wigg maintains that commercial wave energy projects are a newer undertaking but that AW-Energy’s alliance throughout the certification process indicates commitment on their side, and that Lloyd’s Register Energy is looking forward to working with AW-Energy in order to ensure both their commercial and technological success.

Wave energy technologies expected to flourish in the near future

These types of commercial wave energy projects are just starting to be implemented by governments and utilities around the globe, as it’s a renewable alternative to their portfolios. Predictions forecast huge growth concerning wave energy capacity over the next 5 years or so.

AW-Energy is one of the few top providers of technology which meets the levels of requirements for commercial projects such as wave technology, where installations are on-going in countries such as France, Chile and Portugal.

“I am thrilled to see the emergence of one of the prerequisites for WaveRoller™’s commercial roll out. The involvement of an institution like Lloyd’s Register Energy to this extent will ensure that the highest quality standards and technical excellence are met.” – AW-Energy CEO, John Liljelund

AW-Energy as a history of undertaking to work with influential and reliable partners, therefore the collaboration between itself and companies such as Lloyd’s Register Energy as well as with DNV GL, who is both leading company’s within their respective fields, further bolster the prestige of the development team at AW-Energy.

The official inauguration of the Framework Agreement between AW-Energy and Lloyd’s Register Energy took place and was witnessed at the Embassy of Finland in London.

Leena Gardemeister, Chargé d’Affaires, Embassy of Finland in London

“The Finnish Embassy in London is delighted to witness the signing of the Framework Agreement, which opens the door for wide scale commercial deployment of Finnish wave energy solutions globally.

The WaveRoller™ technology not only offers a novel and previously untapped source of renewable energy; it has minimal visual impact and it even creates artificial basis for reef ecosystems to flourish.

Companies like AW-Energy are the key players in Team Finland, which increasingly focuses on CleanTech solutions for global sustainability challenges. We were honoured to host Mr Mark Prisk MP, Prime Minister’s Investment Envoy to Nordic and Baltic States as well as and Mr John Liljelund CEO AW-Energy and Mr Ross Wigg, VP Lloyd’s Register Energy with their teams at the Embassy.”
