If you’re paying network charges on your business’s energy bill, you may start to be charged higher rates in July.
From July 1 your business will start being charged in terms of kilovolts (kVA) which is how much power is being supplied to the property, rather than the current system which charges you for how much electricity is actually used, based on kilowatts (kWh). The pricing change is intended to more thoroughly reflect the overall usage of each property, in order to ensure the cost of network provision is correctly distributed.
What does this mean for my network charges?
A demand charge, (which is included in your network charges), depends on the maximum demand peak on your account. This is the largest amount of power supplied to your property in a half-hour period. Under the current legislation this is charged to consumers in kilowatts, this will soon swap to kilovolts.
How will this affect my business’s power bill?
Because of this legislation, the price of your electricity bill will change based on how energy efficient your property is, and the total demand on the grid from your building. There are a number of ways to prepare for this change in order to make sure these network charges don’t double your power bill.
These can include simple improvements, like replacing lights with energy efficient globes, and upgrading inefficient electrical equipment and appliances to facilities with a higher energy efficiency rating.
