Samsung has revealed a long-lasting electric vehicle (EV) battery prototype that may eliminate buyers concerns of a limited driving range.
It is designed to improve the futuristic cars driving range as well as reducing the impact to the environment in production.
Samsung SDI, the battery-making affiliate, unveiled the prototype at the recent Detroit Auto Show. The design sports a high-density prototype battery, which allows a driving range of up to 600 km off one single charge.
This is a vast improvement in comparison to other available batteries which can only reach 500 km without recharging.
Samsung is expected to start commercial production of the electric vehicle batteries by the year 2020.
Long-range batteries make EV’s more attractive
Range anxiety is a commonly faced issue of electric vehicle drivers/ potential buyers. Electric vehicle charging stations are becoming increasingly common these days, however they are very scarce compared to traditional fuel stations.
As many electric vehicles have a low driving range, the thought of running out of charge no where near a charging station is terrifying to some, and may be a highly influential factor when choosing a new vehicle. Until this situation improves, many potential buyers will not want to invest.
Electric vehicles need to be considered worthwhile by companies with research budgets; the automotive industry is now turning out to be another form of revenue for technologies businesses who are faced with a decline in personal computer and mobile phone sales.
Diversity must be addressed and new technologies explored now if they wish to still be competitive in the industry in the future.
Customized battery products
Additional customized battery products from Samsung were also unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show for the North American Auto Market, such as the Low Height Pack and the Low Voltage System.
Low Height Pack
The Low Height Pack offers electric vehicles a significant battery size reduction- 2o to 30 per cent lower that current packs, and it also increases energy density. The combination of height reduction and increased energy density allows car designers to have more packs easily installed and decrease production costs.
Low Voltage System
This system aids eco-friendliness and improves the efficiency of fuel. It can be installed in both regular and electric vehicles, and it provides economic value by saving fuel as well as helping reduce carbon emissions by replacing lead-acid batteries with lithium-ium ones (in regular vehicles).
