1. Government policies will make or break changes in climate action and energy industry trends.

In the study conducted by the International Energy Agency, energy demand is likely to grow one third between 2013 and 2040 – with most contribution coming from non-OECD countries. Despite signs that a low-carbon transition is on its way, carbon emissions from the energy sector alone are expected to rise by 16 per cent by 2040. Governments will face serious pressure when it comes to climate change action – more than they have in the past.

    2. Energy Demand Will Grow 1% per year between now and 2040 – half the annual rate since 1990.

Although the demand for energy will continue to increase, the rate will at least be lower than it has been in the previous 20 years. This is thanks to increased energy efficiency and structural changes to the economy, meaning less energy will be required with the rise of renewable energy sources like solar power and wind power.

    3. Coal Consumption Will Continue to Fall

By 2040 oil and coal will reduce its share of the global energy supply by 9 per cent, with renewable energy taking 5 per cent and gas and nuclear making up the other 4 per cent. “Coal supply grew faster than any other major fuel in the last decade, but is the slowest-growing fuel in the decades to come, with global production increasing by around 10% by 2040” said the World Energy Report 2016.

    4. Renewables will overtake Fossil Fuels

By the early 2030s, renewable energy is predicted to overtake coal as the largest source of energy in the world. Renewable energy will reach 50 per cent in the EU, 30 per cent in China and Japan, 25 per cent in the US and India. Coal-fired energy will only make up 30 per cent of the world’s energy demands by 2040. Between 2015 and 2040 3600 GW of renewable energy will be introduced to the global energy supply.

    5. At current rates, we will not reach the 2°C temperature goal

The IEA’s scenario predicts that despite the many positive measures being taken to reduce fossil fuel consumption, carbon emissions and pollution, the measures are not nearly enough to reach the maximum temperature rise goals. If we continue at our current levels of climate action globally, we will exceed the safe temperature levels that have been revealed by climate research.

    6. Energy Sector Will Face More Pressure to Increase Climate Action Efforts

Despite positive efforts currently in place, climate action will continue to be insufficient when compared with the dire situation our climate faces. If the energy predictions of the World Energy Outlook are correct, the energy sector does not appear to be progressing climate action as fast needed. Five measures were identified as needing to be addressed by the global energy industry in order to reach our goals:

Improving energy efficiency in the construction and transport sectors

Phasing out the use of the least efficient coal-fired power plants

Boosting investment in renewables-based power generation technologies

      Phasing out fossil fuel subsidies

Reducing methane emissions in oil and gas production
