Late last year Tesla, in conjunction with Solar City,  unveiled its innovative solar roof tiles made to mimic the regular roofing tiles but built with nearly the same efficiency of cells that traditionally gather solar power. These will be available for purchase anytime now, according to the company’s CEO Elon Musk.

This is a crucial step in Tesla’s ambitious vision to merge its solar energy generation and storage ventures with its electric vehicle business.

The solar tiles will be used to popularize the tech as a practical option for ordinary homeowners looking to save more on their electricity bills, increase their home’s resale value and have control over their energy consumption needs, as opposed to just being another solar tech that only targets the affluent and hardcore tech and green energy enthusiasts.

Tesla’s solar tile patterns feature four visually appealing styles which imitate four different types of traditional roofing material, although the company plans to avail just one or two of these at first.

According to revelations made by Musk in November 2016, the roof tiles solution is expected to cost the same or even less compared to the conventional new roof for a home before considering energy cost savings.

Note: Installations may not necessary happen in April and it’s probable that Tesla will create a queue in form of pre-orders and do the installations a bit later. Volume or bulk production is expected to start sometime later this year.
