The values of Small-scale Technology Certificate (STCs) are currently rocking strong – and that’s exciting news for Australians looking to install a solar power system. Certainly, the time is always right to make hay (or install solar panels) while the abundant sun still shines on Australia.
STC’s accompany eligible solar hot water and solar power systems, forming the core basis of the Solar Credits program in Australia. Interestingly, STCs can be traded for cash and each one is equivalent to one megawatt hour of electricity generation over a 15-year period.
The solar system’s size and area of installation determine the number of STC’s to be received– but generally, they help slash the cost of a 5kW solar panel by thousands of dollars. Solar providers find it inconveniencing cashing STC’s in, especially when dealing with the average person, hence their value is often offered as a point of sale discount.
What You Need To Know About
What are STCs?
Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) are a financial incentive to encourage consumers to install solar and heat pump water heaters under a Federal Government operated scheme. STCs are only available for qualifying solar & heat pump installations across Australian states. One STC is equivalent to a megawatt hour per year (MWh/yr) of electricity displaced. Solar and heat pump water heaters rely on the sun’s energy to heat water, thereby displacing the use of electricity.
Eligibility Criteria
Basically, STCs are only created for those solar and heat pump water heaters listed on the Clean Energy Regulator’s ‘Registers of Solar Water Heaters’ and ‘Heat Pump Water Heaters’. For solar and heat pump water heaters launched in recent times, most service providers pay a financial benefit for these systems until they are finally published on the register. Systems being installed in new and existing homes are also eligible. Notably, it’s the owner of the solar and/or heat pump water heater that qualifies to claim the STCs. Australia is split into four zones for solar and five zones for heat pumps, and the installation location of the water heater is eligible for the STCs shown here ret.cleanenergyregulator.gov.au
How many STCs do I qualify for?
Each solar or heat pump system qualifies for a different number of Small-scale Technology Certificates, which is determined by the systems’ capacity, efficiency and installation location.
How to Claim STCs through Your Solar Provider
The process of claiming STCs is as easy as a pie. At the time of installation, your solar installer should give you a STC assignment form to complete with your plumber and thereafter be returned with all the required attachments.
